Proterozoic magmatism in central southern Australia reflects a temporal and isotopic switch from inter-cratonic recycling of Palaeoproterozoic lithosphere during a significant mantle depletion. The Davenport Province is a fluvial to shallow-marine sequence of weakly metamorphosed sandstone, rhyolite and basalt deposited in an ensialic basin that was probably initiated by continental extension. Isopach ridges and cut-offs suggest that synsedimentary normal and transfer faults controlled deposition. These faults were reactivated as reverse faults and strike-slip faults during deformation.

In this scenario, the younger (– Ga) Grenvillian-aged Musgrave Province of central Australia, which separates all three cratons, has been considered postcollisional to intracratonic. However, new and recent U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopic analyses of zircons from the Musgrave Province indicate continuous active-margin magmatic activity between.

Components. Australia's geology can be divided into several main sections: the Archaean cratonic shields, Proterozoic fold belts and sedimentary basins, Phanerozoic sedimentary basins, and Phanerozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks. Australia as a separate continent began to form after the breakup of Gondwana in the Permian, with the separation of the continental landmass from the African.

The Proterozoic stratigraphy of the Davenport Province uncomformably overlies these units and consists of the Ooradidgee and Hatches Creek groups (Fig. The uppermost parts of the stratigraphy are covered by younger sedimentary rocks.

The Davenport Province is a fluvial to shallow-marine sequence of weakly metamorphosed sandstone, rhyolite and basalt deposited in an ensialic basin t. Proterozoic Australia has long been interpreted as a single intact continent in which all tectonic and magmatic activity was intracratonic.

This paper proposes an alternative hypothesis in which numerous fragments of continental crust were assembled by plate tectonic processes. The Early Proterozoic geology of northern Australia has been used by Etheridge et al. () for proposing the “Barramundi” concept in which correlation of lithological, structural, metamorphic and magmatic elements across the now-separate Palaeoproterozoic inliers is attributed to a single major crustal event: the Barramundi Orogeny, dated at – Ma by Page ( Alastair J.

Two of the most important terrains in the Australian Proterozoic are the Arunta and Musgrave Blocks in central Australia. The Musgrave Block and its apparent extension into the Albany Fraser Province constitute the only major Grenvillian-aged ( Ma) orogenic system in Australia.

km2 in the central-eastern NT and extends into western Queensland. The basin is bounded to the northeast and east by Proterozoic terranes of the McArthur Basin, South Nicholson Basin, Lawn Hill Platform and Mount Isa Inlier, and to the west by the Proterozoic Tomkinson, Warramunga and Davenport provinces of the Tennant Region. The Arunta Inlier is part of a major ensialic Proterozoic mobile belt in central Australia.

It comprises three latitudinal tectonic Provinces (Northern, Central and Southern) which have markedly different lithological, metamorphic and structural histories, and are bounded by major deformed zones.EL is a part of company’s Davenport Project comprising three granted tenements -EL, EL and Davenport Project is located within the Davenport Province of Tennant Region in the Northern Territory.
